NEW FIRST AIDERS
25th March

All Mayfair Sports Curriculum students are taught first aid as part of the curriculum but now students in years 7, 8 and 9 have been given the opportunity to achieve a first aid certificate through the British Heart Foundation´s Heartstart programme. During the course the students acquired the skills necessary to deal with assessing unconscious patients, dealing with choking and serious bleeding as well as learning how to administer CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) in the case of someone suffering cardiac arrest.
CLOUD COMPUTING COMES TO MAYFAIR ACADEMY
25th March

Mayfair International Academy is following in the footsteps of thousands of universities by implementing Google Apps Education Suite throughout the school. All students now have their own application suite in the cloud, accessible from anywhere with internet connection. The integration of Google Apps into the school's current IT infrastructure allows all students to have their own secure account within the Mayfair Domain with e.mail, document applications, calendars, timetables and discussion forums. These applications allow students to work collaboratively on documents, access and submit school work assignments, from both school and home, access material and post questions to Form Tutors and teachers. Teachers can then assess the student's work online and return it to the student with helpful advice.
CYCLING FOR HAITI
19th February

To raise funds to help the people of Haiti rebuild their lives after the devastating earthquake, Mayfair secondary students spent the day before half term break on a sponsored cycle marathon. The cyclists utilized the spinners in the fitness centre under the watchful eyes of the Sports Curriculum Instructors who monitored each student´s speed and endurance. Points were allocated to the four houses participating and Africa House was presented with a cup for collecting the most points. The students raised 1,080 euros for Haiti Relief Fund.

PRIMARY BOOK WEEK
15th to 19th February

Mayfair Primary annual Bookweek, which took place during the last week before the Spring half-term, was another great success. The week culminated with much anticipated Dressing Up Day and, incredibly, the characters were even better than last year! All the children (and parents) must be congratulated on the outstanding costumes on display. Once through the Primary School doors it was like entering Disneyworld. Superman, Spěderman and Batman enjoyed the festivities along with Fireman Sam and 007 James Bond. There were clowns, Indians, pirates, princesses, fairies and vampires. The characters came from far and wide from Hermione from the Harry Potter books to Mary Poppins and even one of the dancing penguins put in an appearance. One of the hundred and one dalmations mingled with characters from the Arabian Nights and Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves. Captain Hook and the wicked witch from Snow White were also spotted
SIERRA NEVADA TRIP
Thursday 21st January 2010

Mayfair Academy students enjoyed a day of skiing and snowboarding in Sierra Nevada. Depending on level of competence, students had the choice of skiing lessons or snowboarding lessons on the nursery slopes whilst the more competent skiers / snowboarders enjoyed the various pistes of Borreguiles which offered excellent conditions with hard packed snow. At the end of the day, most of the students chose to ski or snowboard back to the village via El Rio rather than use the telecabina. See photos of the ski trip in our Photo Gallery.
MAYFAIR ANNUAL MUD RUN
Friday 18th December 2009

At Mayfair Secondary the last day of the Autumn Term is celebrated in a very unusual fashion. Established over five years ago, the Annual Mud Run is not for the fainthearted. Students don their oldest clothes, (some choosing to come in fancy dress) and set out on a two to three mile run which will take them through the roughest, muddiest terrain possible. Two instructors and volunteers from the teaching staff accompany the students and a back up bus picks anyone who drops out en route. On the final part of the run the students must enter the sea and swim a designated distance. No prize is offered for completing the Mud Run although, in the past, students have received various awards such as medals, certificates or the privilege of having a gold star embroidered on their uniform sleeve. Students participate to achieve a sense of accomplishment and this is the reward for the few who complete. The 2009 run saw 50% of entries completing the course. One teacher who participated in the run last year described it as good training for the Triathlon that he had entered for later on that year.
MAYFAIR PRIMARY CHRISTMAS CONCERT
Wednesday 16th December 2009

Mayfair Primary held their Christmas concert on Wednesday 16th December. CHRISTMAS FAIR
Friday 11th December 2009

Mayfair Primary had their annual Christmas Fair on Friday afternoon and they were blessed with lots of sunshine after the recent cold spell. MAYFAIR WELCOMES \'THE SHIRT\'
Wednesday 25th November, 2009

Mayfair Academy students welcomed Bjorn Heidenstrom when he stopped off on the Costa del Sol en route from Oslo, Norway to Robben Island, Cape Town, South Africa.

Speaking to the students, Bjorn inspired them with the presentation of his journey so far; cycling on some of the most dangerous roads in Europe; having his bicycle stolen in Amsterdam; fending off dangerous dogs; coping with the cold and the aches and pains of cycling. Bjorn also spoke about the kindness and generosity of the people he has met en route and how he hopes that his trek will create awareness which, in turn, will create support and help for millions of refugees.

The students presented Bjorn with a Mayfair Academy Football Shirt to add to his growing collection which will eventually be sewn together into an enormous shirt which will wave in the wind of South Africa during the 2010 World Cup.

The gala gave pupils, some of whom have been training for two years with Miss Angie, the opportunity to show off their swimming skills and techniques to their parents, who braved the high temperatures in what must have been one of the hottest days, to cheer on their offspring.
After the gala, the parents were invited to Mayfair's International Day where they sampled delicious dishes from around the world including Greek tabouleh and hummus, Mexican fajitas, Moroccan cous cous, Spanish tortilla, French cheeses with crusty baguettes and some English favourites such as sausage rolls and fairy cakes.
